VGMS & Tri-Club Field Trips
The field trip is lead by David Springer with VGMS (805 -223-0865 or david.springer@arcadis.com). We will be meeting at Avila Beach at 11:30 AM on Sunday November 14, 2021. Meeting place is on the beach walk at Front Street and San Luis cross street in front of the steps. A map showing this location is provided below: From there we will gather for quick instructions, collect forms, and as a group use the steps to access the beach and walk to the left (southwest) about 1/3 mile during a declining tide (12:30 PM low tide) and walk around a rock jutting into the ocean to access the collecting area where DeeDeeite can be found. We will spend about 90 minutes looking for this variety of brecciated rhyolite, where we can also find beach shells, agates and jasper. We will return to the steps by no later than 2 PM to end the collecting part of the trip and folks are welcome to look around the quaint town, grab a late lunch or ice cream, etc. Bring a rock hammer and protective glassess, a bucket, backpack, or collecting bag, and something to drink, and maybe an extra layer since it will be mid November and on the cool side.
