San Simeon; moonstone and jaspers

Led by David Springer. Normal road travel, no special vehicle requirements.

Ventura is 3 hours from San Simeon, CA. We will be meeting at 9am at the Washburn Day Use Area Rest Stop which is outside of and adjacent to the San Simeon Creek Campground, off Highway 1 in San Simeon, CA, immediately south of San Simeon Creek. I will place a VGMS sign at the turn in as the actual sign to the day use area is not in view when driving on Highway 1. There are clean bathrooms at this rest stop, and plenty of parking.

Traveling north on Highway 1 through Cambria it is right past Moonstone Beach Rd., if you cross over San Antonio Creek or reach San Simeon-Monterey Creek Road, you past it and it is about 1/4 mile behind you. Carpooling options are available, let us know if you need a ride and we can try to accommodate.

First phase of trip will be at middle San Simeon Creek (I switched it to take advantage of a cooler morning), which is less than 5 miles from our meeting area to collect all variety of jasper literally filling the dry creek bed. We have permission from the land owners to collect in this area so be respectful of private property here. No open toed shoes!...you will be walking over rocks. You will find all variety and size of brecciated jaspers, jasp-agates, Plasma Agate, serpentinite, etc, at this collecting area. We'll spend about 1.5 hours at the first location. ALERT - lots of large rough to be found here for your rock gardens!

Phase 2 is back to Moonstone Beach to collect "moonstone" and enjoy that epic beach as the day begins to warm up. This is a beach walk collecting area so sandals are OK here. Smaller pieces of jaspers and agates, and wave washed stones, shells and beach glass can be found. The official trip will end at 2 PM. Curious participants can visit the towns of Cambria or Harmony, or perhaps see the wonderful Elephant Seals further up the coast in San Simeon, etc.

Tools: Lunch/snacks in a small cooler, plenty of drinking water, hiking shoes (for creek), flip flops (for sand), a sifter for sand, sunhat, sunscreen, buckets/backpack, garden claw.
