This trip, For VGMS Pebble Pups and families only, will be led by Lisa Batchelder-Hetrick (VGMS).

Punta Gorda is a point on the coast just south of La Conchita. Extending out from it is the Richfield Pier that leads to the man-made Rincon Island, which is actually a disguised oil platform. You collect along what’s called Oil Pier Beach south of the pier, a slim line of sand hugging the U.S. 101 freeway. To access it, take the Sea Cliff exit and follow signs to the Punta Gorda parking area. You then walk through a tunnel beneath the freeway. Looking north, you’ll see the pier and the Cliff House Inn. We will be meeting at the beach at 12:30pm and start with a quick safety talk and identification lesson. Then the hunt is on until 2:30pm. You are more than welcome to come early or stay late, but the pups portion of the day is from 12:30-2:30pm.

Please pack what you need for the beach setting (towel, hat, sunscreen), snack and water, your collection bag or bucket. I am advising that we follow all CDC guidelines while we are together including the use of a mask and social distancing as circumstances require it. You should know that there is NOT a bathroom facility at this location.

If you need to leave during the Pebble Pup portion of the day, please notify Lisa or another adult club member so we are aware you are leaving and check back in when you come back.

As with all in-person Pebble Pup classes, a parent or guardian is required to stay with your child during the entirety of the class.

We will primarily be looking for jasper cobbles and pebbles suitable for slabbing or tumbling. Red, yellow, and multi-colored brecciated jasper. Also, some agate and travertine, as well as neat seashells.
